Control the Weeds Before They Overtake Your Property
Weed control is no one's favorite chore, but it has to be done. Otherwise, those invasive plants will quickly overtake your yard or garden, slowly choking out your flowers, grass, herbs, and vegetables by stealing their water, nutrients, and sunlight.
There are a variety of ways to eliminate weeds, from pulling them up by hand to mulching to applying herbicides. The approach you take will depend upon the extent of the problem, where the weeds are growing (in your lawn or in your garden), and how much time you have to devote to weed control. While herbicides may seem like the simplest solution, they must be applied carefully to avoid damaging your plants, and they can contribute to decreased soil quality over time.
At Shades of Green Nursery + Landscape, we carry a selection of herbicides in our garden center, but we'll also help you compare your alternatives to determine if herbicides are really the best choice for your property. If so, we'll help you choose one and teach you how to apply it to minimize the risk to your soil and other plants.
Contact us or come to the nursery and plan to spend some time here. There's a lot to look at—we carry all the potting soil, mulch, compost, fertilizer, tools, decor, and gifts you can imagine—and we have a very special location in Frisco, Texas with a beautiful stream, barn, and 200-year-old cottonwood trees. Come say hi, and talk to our knowledgeable staff about using herbicides on your North Texas property.
Weed Control Basics
Herbicides aren't the only way to control weeds. Here are some of your other options:
- Mulching: Mulch deprives would-be weeds of sunlight and inhibits their growth.
- Ground Cover: Keep your soil busy growing something else! Weeds won't have a chance to find water or sunlight. You can take this approach by planting your flowers and even your vegetables close together.
- Healthy Soil and Regular Mowing: If weeds are a problem in your lawn, there may be an issue with the health of your soil that's preventing the grass from growing densely. If you mow your lawn too short or too often, it can cause extra stress on the grass, which also limits its ability to grow thick and healthy.
- Boiling Water: If weeds are a problem in the cracks of your sidewalks or on a gravel road, you can burn them with a pot of boiling water.
- Pulling: Ah, yes, weeding the garden. Make sure you've got a good pair of gloves! This is best when done on a near daily basis, so you get rid of a few weeds at a time before they become a huge problem.
- Pre-Emergents: Stop weeds before they sprout, learn more here.
- Herbicides: When nothing else will do, herbicides come to the rescue! Talk to our staff about how to choose and apply an herbicide for the best results.
Don't let a few weeds get you down. No matter which approach you want to take with your weeds, our garden center has everything you need to get the job done—mulch, beautiful ground-cover plants, organic fertilizers, gloves, spades and other tools. Give us a call and stop by today!
