Improve Your Soil the Healthy Way
Compost is made of decomposed organic materials, like fruit and vegetable scraps, leaves, grass clippings, paper, nutshells, and more. If you've got that DIY spirit, you can make it yourself right here in North Texas! All you need is a bin (they even make tiny ones for your kitchen counter), a little know-how about what can be composted and what can't, and a sticky note that reminds you to turn it over now and again. Fortunately, for simplicity's sake, it's also available at your favorite local garden center.
By adding compost to your soil, you introduce a wealth of nutrients that improves the condition of your soil, encourages the growth of good bacteria, and reduces the need to use chemical fertilizers. It can also help your soil retain moisture, which means you can use less water in your yard.
At Shades of Green Nursery + Landscape, we love compost, and we're here to teach you all about it: how to make it, how to use it, and why you need it. When you visit our garden center, you'll have a wide selection to choose from, along with a wide range of other gardening tools and materials. With years of experience in Frisco, Texas and the surrounding area, our team is ready to answer all your questions about North Texas plants and landscaping.

How to Make Your Own
If your soil needs help right now, you can pick up a bag of compost at our garden center. If you want to recycle your organic matter (and give your kids a science lesson!), you might enjoy making your own. This is what you need to know:
- You can make compost in a pile or in a bin. A pile of scraps in your yard might sound like a mess, but a properly controlled and cared for compost pile shouldn't attract any pests. Talk to our staff about creating a successful compost pile or bin.
- You'll need a mix of greens (grass clippings, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds), browns (leaves, twigs, sawdust), and water.
- Don't add dairy products, coal dust, fats/grease, meat scraps, pet waste, or sick plants.
- Turn the pile over every few weeks.
- Keep in mind that it could take a few months or even a year before it’s ready to use.
At-home composting is growing in popularity, and we're here for it. Our knowledgeable staff can give you more tips about composting in Frisco, and we invite you to take advantage of our free workshops and newsletter to learn more about gardening. Contact us, try to stump us with your gardening questions, and ask us for directions to our seven-acre property.
