Understand Why Your Plants Are Unwell and Help them Heal
Your plants are looking droopy, sad, brown, broken, or otherwise unwell, and you don't know why. You're doing everything right! So what's going wrong?
Sometimes plant diagnosis is easy—you may even be able to do it yourself. It happens a lot when people notice the leaves wilting and think, "Oh, no! I haven't watered that plant in two weeks!"
All green thumb jokes aside, there are a lot of other reasons why plants may fail to thrive, and that's where professional plant diagnosis becomes important. In some cases, your plants may not be getting the right amount of water or sunlight. Plants can also get sick just like humans can; there are plant diseases and pests that can wreak havoc on an entire forest, so your garden isn't immune.
Our Frisco, Texas horticulture experts have years of experience in plant diagnosis. If you're not sure what's wrong with your plants, contact us.
Can this Plant Be Saved? How Plant Diagnosis Can Help
Texas native plants are equipped to thrive in this region's soil and climate, but that doesn't mean they're immune to pests, disease, fungus, bacteria, and accidental mistreatment. If you see your plants struggling, don't despair. The first step is figuring out what's going wrong—you may be able to turn it around. Here's what we consider when we do plant diagnosis:
- What type of plant are we dealing with?
- How's the plant supposed to look/behave when it is healthy?
- What is unusual about the appearance/behavior of the plant now? What symptoms are present?
- What are some common problems associated with this species?
- What's happening in the plant's environment? (i.e. soil condition, sunlight, water, extreme temperatures, spacing with other plants, etc.)
- What pests or diseases are common in the area at this time of year?
We may need to examine the soil, leaves, roots, and more to determine what's wrong with the plant. If it's a pest, you may be able to use a small amount of pesticide or plant another species that acts as a deterrent to that pest. Fungicides can be used to eliminate mold, though you may have to remove any infected plants. In some cases, it may not be possible to diagnose the plant's condition, or the plant may be suffering from several issues.
