Healthy Soil Gives Your Plants a Good Start in Life
Whether you're growing herbs, flowers, Texas native perennials, or any other plant in a pot, your potting soil is the first step toward success. A mixture of ingredients like peat moss, coconut coir, vermiculite, pumice, and organic fertilizer, potting soil provides the right combination of nutrients, space for root growth, and proper moisture retention and drainage.
There are different types of potting soil for different types of plants, and you'll find them all at Shades of Green Nursery + Landscape in Frisco, Texas. Our garden center is a go-to source for all things gardening: tools, compost, mulch, potting soil, organic fertilizer, decorative items, seeds, gifts, and more. We carry an extensive inventory of Texas native perennials and well-adapted annuals that will grow in North Texas, and we can help you choose plants that know how to thrive in a pot, whether inside on a shelf or outside on your porch.
There's no such thing as someone who can't garden or grow a houseplant. If your plants are struggling, it's likely because you don't have the right tools and materials, or the right balance of sunlight, shade, moisture, and more. We can help. As a full-service drought-tolerant landscaping company, we know a thing or two about horticulture, and we can help with everything from plant selection and tree installation to full-scale landscape design and construction.

Potting Soil and You
Here's a quick Q&A to help you understand potting soil and why choosing the right one will make you a better potted-plant gardener:
Contact us for directions to our garden center, where you can browse our selection of potting soil, tools, and other materials. Stay for a stroll along the creek and to speak with our staff members about your gardening dreams and challenges.
- Can't I just dig up some dirt from outside and put it in a pot? You could, but it's probably not the best choice for your plants. North Texas clay soil is hard-packed and slow-draining, which is not ideal for a plant in a pot.
- What about garden soil? It's not the same as potting soil. Garden soil is a mixture of natural soil and compost, while potting soil is made of a variety of other ingredients that make a light, fluffy substance designed to offer aeration, appropriate drainage, and a balanced pH.
- Can I plant my cacti and my orchids in the same potting soil? There are all-purpose potting soils that will serve most potted plants pretty well, but you can get more specific to meet the needs of certain plants. A cactus, for example, needs a dryer mixture that allows air to reach the roots, while orchids need more bark than soil. At our garden center, we carry several different types of potting soil, and we can help you choose the right one for your plants.
- Is the right potting soil the one answer I've been looking for? It's a big part of it, but you'll still need to position your potted plants to get the right amount of direct or indirect sunlight, or no sunlight, along with the right amount of water. Plants are very picky this way, but the Shades of Green Nursery + Landscape team can help you demystify their preferences so they thrive in your home.
