Plant It Right. Help It Thrive.
North Texas trees deal with heat, clay soil, wind, drought,
and unpredictable weather. The good news: if you plant your
tree correctly and give it consistent care during its first
year, you give it a much better chance to establish strong roots
and grow for decades.
How to Plant Your Tree
- Choose the right location. Consider the mature size of the tree, nearby structures, power lines, sidewalks, and utilities.
- Dig wide, not deep. The hole should generally be about twice as wide as the root ball, but no deeper than the root ball itself.
- Find the root flare. The point where the trunk begins to widen into the roots should sit at or slightly above the surrounding soil level.
- Backfill with your native soil. Firm the soil gently around the root ball without heavily compacting it.
- Water thoroughly. Slowly soak the root ball and surrounding soil immediately after planting.
- Add mulch. Use a light layer of mulch over the root zone, but keep mulch several inches away from the trunk.

Check the soil regularly rather than watering strictly by the calendar.
Mulch
Maintain a thin mulch layer to help moderate soil temperature and retain moisture.
Never pile mulch against the trunk.

Avoid pushing heavy top growth immediately after planting.
Root establishment is the priority during the first growing season.
Keep an Eye on It
Some leaf drop or temporary stress can occur after transplanting.
Watch for prolonged wilting, major discoloration, or declining branches.
One of the Biggest Tree-Killers? Too Much Love.
More water is not always better. North Texas clay can hold moisture
for a long time, which means a tree can be overwatered even during
hot weather.
Before watering again, check the soil near the root ball.
If it is still wet several inches down, give the tree more time.
