Christmas Trees are Coming Soon!
Christmas Trees will arrive at Shades of Green the week before Thanksgiving. A new offering this year will be flocked trees! If you like the “snow covered” look, then flocking is the way to go. Call or come by for details.
There are approximately 25-30 million real Christmas trees of 16 different types sold in the United States every year. Shades of Green sells the 3 most popular.
One of the most popular Christmas tree species in the United States, Douglas firs are shipped to the majority of states and also exported to the Hawaiian Islands. The trees’ soft needles are dark green to blue-green in color and are approximately 1-1 ½ inches in length. The needles radiate in all directions from the branch. When crushed, needles have a sweet fragrance.
The combination of form, needle retention, dark blue-green color, and pleasant scent has led to Fraser fir being the most popular Christmas tree species in the country. Their branches turn slightly upward, making them great for displaying ornaments and holding lights. It requires 7 to 10 years in the field to produce a 6-7 foot tree. North Carolina produces the majority of Fraser fir Christmas trees.
The Grand fir is one of the tallest firs, reaching heights of 300 feet in the forest of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. It is a beautiful, thick foliaged tree when sheared and is known for its strong fragrance. In most growing regions, it will produce a marketable tree in eight to ten years.
