Planting Your Vegetable Garden

Planting Your Vegetable Garden

Spring is coming up soon. It’s time to start planning your garden. Planting your vegetable garden in North Texas is not a difficult task and we can help you out with what to plant and how.

Prep the Soil

We all know that the soil is the foundation of a garden. Prepping it properly will let you have a healthy garden. A good first start is to put a layer of compost on it. You can always make your own or purchase it locally (Shades of Green has excellent compost). Also, make sure that the soil has the correct amount of moisture.

Check the Drainage

When planting an outdoor garden make sure it has proper drainage. We all know how the weather is here in Texas, feast or famine. In the rainy season, we get a lot of water. One of the things you can do is plant your garden in raised beds. This way you can create the correct amount of drainage and keep your vegetables happy.

Let the Sun In

Almost all vegetables love a lot of sunlight. In other words, don’t plant under a tree (ha-ha). Plant in an area that provides a lot of sunshine. You should make sure that the garden get at least six hours of sunlight. Only some of the leafy greens can tolerate a small amount of shade.

Don’t Go Overboard

Don’t plant more than your garden can handle. Remember, plants are like people, they like their space. A lot of people get out of hand when planting their vegetable gardens and think they are planting for a soup kitchen. Get information on the distance depends on what you plan on planting. Twelve inches is about the average when planting.

Nutrients

Of course we all know that your plants will need water. But most people forget about the nutrients they need. If you choose to buy fertilizer, stick with a natural blend. Or, as some people do, harvest your own. Most of us do have some sort of pet.

Eliminate all the Enemies

Your garden will get enemies. This can range from animals, insects and even invasive plants. Best practice is to start early so the problem does not get out of hand. Fence out the animals. Plant other plants to keep away the bad insects. Weed, weed and keep weeding your garden because they usually come back.
