Low Maintenance Garden

Planning a xeriscape garden in Texas is a good idea for many homes. These gardens do not require much maintenance.

Having a low maintenance garden is a lot easier than you would think. Some people just don’t have the time to pay attention to high maintenance gardens. These are some of the best examples for xeriscaping your home.

Black-Eyed Susan

Black-Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta) are native to North America and is an easy maintenance plant for your garden. It provides a touch of color and requires little water and can grow in full and partial sun. One of the great benefits is it not only attracts butterflies, it also attracts many species of birds for its seeds.

Hens and Chicks

Sempervivum ‘Red Beauty’ makes for a great ground covering for almost any garden. It is a relatively small plant (3” to 4”) that can grow in very dry soil and even rock gardens.

Spanish Dagger

Yucca treculeana is a giant sized yucca that is native to Texas. They can grow up to 12’ high. The fruits are edible. First they are baked, stripped of the seeds, and then mashed to form flat cakes that are sundried.

Four-Nerve Daisy

Another native Texan plant that is drought and heat resistant. Not only is it good for a ground covering, it also has a nice fragrance to it. One of its main characteristics because it often blooms throughout the winter months.


Magnolia grandiflora ‘Teddy Bear’ is a tree that provides a lot when you are looking for something drought tolerant. This low maintenance tree has many benefits. It attracts hummingbirds, song birds, butterflies and even some amphibians.

Red Hot Poker

Another plant that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds while bringing a colorful touch to your garden area. With shades of red, yellow and orange, it is the perfect complement with any other plants.

Evergreen Wisteria

Millettia reticulata is a vine that blooms all season. Its fragrant, rose-purple flowers attract pollinators. This woody vine can grow to heights up to 30’, but can be kept shorter with regular pruning.


When you are looking to cover a lot of ground, Plumbago auriculata is the way to go. Its fragrant yellow flowers attract butterflies and songbirds. This plant is also known for its ability to extract nickel from contaminated soil.

    Can Hens and Chicks, Sempervivum ‘Red Beauty’ survive in the winter outdoors here? i.e.. occasional cold snaps in the 20s in North Texas?
