Houseplants are Good for You

…and NASA says so!

Like most things, houseplants come and go in popularity. You have your tried and true houseplants like a Pothos Ivy or a Dracena. And then you have the ones that explode in popularity after a couple of hipsters put them on their Instagram… I’m looking at you Fiddle Leaf Fig!

No matter the case, houseplants are the easiest way to liven up your room and bring life to an empty space. Beyond their aesthetics, more and more researchers are finding out the benefits of houseplants servings as air filters for your home. It started with NASA (yes…that NASA). Back in 1989, they put together a list of their “Top Air-cleaning Houseplants.” At first glance, it seems strange to think about plants in space. Plants in Space seems like the title to a low-budget film on the ScyFy channel. However, creating “clean” air is a vital component in the International Space Station. Plants on their list can remove benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene from the air. Below are just a few of the numerous on Mr. Spaceman’s list:

English Ivy (Hedra helix)

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum Mauna Loa)

Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata Laurentii)

NASA recommends having at least one plant per 100 square feet of interior space…which can get seem a bit overwhelming. Don’t worry about that, just start small and breathe in that fresh air and then you’ll be back for more!
